LED Screen P2 or P4? How to Choose the Right One

The choice: LED screen P2 or P4 shouldn't start with the module price alone. First, you need to determine from what distance viewers will look at the content, how large the screen should be, and whether the displayed materials contain fine text, price lists, product photos or dynamic video. The difference between P2 and P4 is clear, but it doesn't justify buying a smaller-pixel screen in every project.

For a shop, reception, showroom or sales point, a P2 screen often gives a quality advantage. For a large LED wall viewed from the other end of a hall, an event space or a club, a P4 screen can deliver the right effect at a more reasonable budget. What's key is matching the parameters to the actual mounting conditions.

LED screen P2 or P4 - what does the P designation mean?

The letter P stands for pixel pitch, the distance between the centers of adjacent pixels, expressed in millimeters. In a P2 screen, it's 2 mm; in a P4 screen, it's 4 mm. A smaller pixel pitch means higher pixel density, higher resolution on the same surface, and better close-up legibility.

This doesn't mean P2 is automatically the better solution. A P2 screen requires more diodes and often more modules to achieve the same physical format. This translates into purchase cost, control requirements, and sometimes greater service complexity. P4 has fewer pixels per square meter, so for large diagonals it can be a significantly more cost-effective solution.

In practice, a 2 x 1 m screen in P2 technology can have a resolution of around 1000 x 500 pixels. The same format in P4 will achieve around 500 x 250 pixels. On P2, you can more comfortably display smaller fonts, graphic detail and materials prepared in higher quality. P4 needs simpler composition - larger text, contrasting elements and properly prepared video material.

Viewing distance determines the choice

The most practical criterion is the minimum viewer distance from the screen. It's generally assumed that the comfortable minimum viewing distance is roughly 1.5 to 2.5 times the pixel pitch value expressed in meters. This is a starting point, not a rigid rule, since a lot depends on the type of content and viewer expectations.

For P2, this usually means comfortable viewing already from around 2-3 meters. Such a screen works well where a customer approaches a storefront, stands at a counter, waits at a reception desk, or stays close to a media wall. P4 usually looks best from around 4-6 meters. From a closer perspective, the pixel structure will be more noticeable, especially on a bright background and with small text.

It's worth separating minimum distance from the viewer's typical distance. If a screen in a shopping mall is mounted above an entrance and viewers usually look at it from 8-12 meters, P4 can be fully sufficient. If that same screen is meant to display promotions right next to a walkway, where people pass it at a distance of 2 meters, P2 will be the safer choice.

Don't judge a pixel based on a photo alone

Photos of LED screens taken with a phone can be misleading. The camera can reveal a pixel grid, a moiré effect, or uneven brightness that the human eye doesn't perceive the same way from the proper distance. Evaluation should account for actual distance, viewing angle, object lighting and specific content, not just the P2 or P4 designation in the specification.

Where does P2 give a real advantage?

A P2 screen is a good choice for indoor installations where close-up image reception matters. This mainly applies to shop windows viewed from inside, sales salons, offices, receptions, trade show displays, customer service points and compact LED walls in conference rooms. It also works well as an advertising screen when the message includes prices, service lists, QR codes, schedules or detailed product materials.

P2 is also worth considering with limited mounting surface. When a screen is meant to be, for example, 1.5-2 m wide, higher pixel density lets you achieve a usable resolution without oversizing the housing. This matters in small venues, at trade show booths and in storefronts where every centimeter counts.

However, you shouldn't assume P2 will solve the problem of poorly prepared materials. Graphics that are too small, illegible typography, or a video with the wrong aspect ratio will look bad even on a high-pixel-density screen. Screen resolution should go hand in hand with the right content format and correct configuration of the video processor and player.

When will a P4 screen be more sensible?

P4 is a common choice for larger advertising screens, club walls, event installations, stage screens and surfaces mounted in large interiors. Its strength is the cost-to-image-size ratio. For a screen several meters wide, viewed from a distance, the quality difference compared to P2 can be small for the viewer, while the difference in the whole system's price can be significant.

It's also a good variant for content with a clear, advertising-style form: large logos, animations, music videos, promotional messages and stage visuals. P4 doesn't require designing materials with such fine detail, but it can still present an attractive, dynamic image if contrast and proper element scale are maintained.

For screen rentals, it's especially worth carefully assessing the event conditions. A P4 screen behind a stage or a DJ booth is usually viewed from several or a dozen meters. Using P2 in such a location can raise the project cost without a clear benefit for the audience. The situation looks different during an intimate conference, when participants sit close to the screen and read slides with tables.

Resolution isn't the only technical parameter

When comparing an LED screen in P2 and P4, you need to check more than pixel pitch. For the whole installation to work correctly, brightness, refresh rate, grayscale, diode type, power consumption, cooling method, protection rating and cabinet or module construction all matter. These parameters affect image quality, durability and operational safety.

In storefront installations, brightness matters especially. A screen working behind glass and facing street traffic has to handle daylight, but excessive brightness after dark can be uncomfortable. Brightness control is therefore necessary, ideally with a schedule or a sensor, not just choosing a smaller pixel.

For larger productions, the controller, receiving cards, video processor and cabling also need to be matched to the required resolution. P2 at the same surface area generates more pixels than P4, so it may require a more powerful signal transmission system. The project has to account for port reserve, signal splitting, power supply and service access to the modules.

How to make the decision before buying?

First, it's worth determining the exact screen size and mapping out its position in the venue. Then you need to measure the closest and most common viewing distance. Only then can you compare P2 and P4 resolution for a specific format, rather than for an abstract square meter.

The next step is preparing sample materials that will actually be displayed. A screen for a restaurant menu, an office information system, storefront advertising, and a club visual all have different requirements. Small text and data need higher pixel density. Video, branding and large slogans can look good on P4 if the viewer maintains a proper distance.

It's also worth considering future use. A screen bought today for a showroom might end up at a trade show next year, or get expanded with additional modules. In such situations, component compatibility, spare parts availability and the ability to correctly configure the system matter.
