A screen next to a road, on a salon's facade, in front of a shopping mall, or at an event site has to remain legible in full sun, rain and after dark. This guide to outdoor LED screens will help translate location, viewer distance and content type into specific hardware parameters. When buying, the diagonal alone doesn't count. An installation's effectiveness is determined mainly by pixel spacing, brightness, housing construction, servicing method, and the complete control system.

From application to outdoor LED screen specification

The starting point should be the question: who will view the message, and from what distance? A screen at a shop entrance works differently than an advertising medium visible from a busy street. In the first case, the viewer may stand a few meters from the LED surface and read finer offer elements. For a screen on a pylon, a facade, or along a driving route, the viewer looks from a greater distance, often for just a few seconds.

The broadcast's purpose matters too. A promotional ad needs strong contrast, high price legibility, and simple messages. An informational screen can display a schedule, customer messages, or operational data. An event installation, meanwhile, usually needs a high refresh rate, smooth camera footage, and a structure suited for frequent assembly.

It's not worth choosing a screen based solely on the available wall space. Too small a surface forces the use of tiny text, and too fine a pixel pitch raises the cost without a real benefit for the viewer. The project should start with a content mockup, viewing distance, and mounting conditions.

Pixel pitch - how much detail do you really need

Pixel pitch defines the distance between the centers of adjacent pixels, expressed in millimeters. The lower the value, the higher the pixel density and the better the close-up image quality. However, this doesn't mean the smallest available pixel pitch will always be the best choice.

For a storefront, a facade viewed from the sidewalk, or a screen at an entrance, smaller spacings are often considered, for example P2.5, P3 or P4. They let you present product graphics, logos and text from a short distance. For advertising screens positioned farther from the viewer, P5, P6, P8 or P10 are often enough. The image will remain legible, and surface cost, power consumption, and control requirements will stay more reasonable.

A practical rule says the minimum comfortable viewing distance can be estimated by multiplying the pixel pitch in millimeters by roughly one meter. A P6 screen will therefore look natural from roughly 6 meters onward, though the actual assessment also depends on the content and the viewer's eyesight. Large letters, high-contrast graphics, and simple animations tolerate a wider pixel spacing better than product photos or elaborate information boards.

Resolution versus content proportions

Screen dimensions should follow from the modules' resolution and the planned format of the materials. Standard 16:9 proportions work well for video material, but they aren't the only solution. A narrow screen above an entrance, a vertical medium next to a storefront, or a custom surface on a facade may need a separate layout.

This needs to be determined before preparing the campaign. Scaling ready-made materials to a random resolution can reduce text legibility, distort a logo, and worsen the reception of the whole broadcast. It's worth planning separate templates for ads, emergency messages, and informational content.

Brightness, contrast and automatic adjustment

An outdoor screen competes with daylight. That's why brightness is one of the most important parameters for an outdoor installation. Outdoor applications usually use screens with brightness in the range of several thousand nits. The specific value depends on exposure: a north-facing wall under a canopy has different requirements than a screen directly sun-exposed for most of the day.

High brightness alone doesn't solve the problem. Diode quality, contrast, color calibration, and how materials are prepared also matter. Black on an LED screen isn't identical to black on an LCD monitor, especially in bright sunlight. The graphic design should use legible typography, clear tonal differences, and a limited amount of fine detail.

A light sensor and automatic brightness adjustment matter a lot operationally. During the day, the screen can run at fuller power, and after dark, lower its luminance. This improves comfort for people in the surroundings, reduces energy consumption, and limits unnecessary strain on components. For installations near a road, homes, or public buildings, you also need to account for local requirements on advertising and light emission.

Outdoor resistance: housing, cooling and servicing

An outdoor LED screen isn't just an indoor screen enclosed in a box. Water, dust, UV radiation, temperature swings, and wind all affect the choice of every element. The IP protection rating for the front and back of the housing is key. This parameter should match the actual mounting method, not just the conditions declared in the offer.

The housing must ensure heat dissipation and electronics protection. Depending on the construction, a screen can use passive or active cooling. Passive cooling reduces noise and the number of moving parts, but requires a properly designed structure and operating conditions. Fans help with higher loads, but mean the need for periodic inspection and cleaning.

Service access is equally important. Modules and power supplies can be serviced from the front or the back. Front servicing is advantageous where there's no technical passage behind the screen, for example when mounted directly on a facade. Rear servicing can be convenient in freestanding structures and installations with backend space. This choice affects the mounting depth, structure cost, and later servicing time.

Support structure and power supply safety

Wall load capacity, steel structure, anchoring method, and wind load need to be assessed before ordering screens. This applies especially to large advertising media, rooftop screens, and pylon installations. The LED surface itself is only part of the project - the frame, flashing, water drainage, and safe service access are equally important.

The electrical installation should account for maximum and typical power draw, circuit division, protections, and grounding. Maximum draw is needed for correctly designing the infrastructure, while actual consumption depends on brightness and the content being emitted. Materials with a lot of white use more energy than darker graphics, so a brightness schedule has a measurable impact on operating costs.

Control, video processor and content management

A professional installation covers more than just LED modules. Power supplies, receiving cards, a controller or control system, cabling, and often a video processor are also needed. Receiving cards transmit data to individual modules, and the processor can scale the image, handle various signal inputs, and fit the material to the screen's physical resolution.

For a simple advertising medium, convenient remote publishing of playlists, schedules, and messages can be key. For an event screen, HDMI or SDI inputs, low latency, and stable cooperation with video production will matter more. In a multi-screen installation, there's also synchronization of all surfaces, so graphics and video material stay consistent.

The system should be chosen as a whole. Mixing random components can lead to problems with mapping, refresh rate, or diagnostics.
