An advertising billboard isn't just a big screen playing a video. It's a display system that has to stay legible from a defined distance, operate stably for many hours, and fit the mounting location. A shop window needs one solution, a building facade another, and a mobile event production yet another. The right choice starts with the operating conditions, not with the screen's diagonal alone.

Advertising billboard and the display's purpose

The first question should be: who will view the message, and from what distance? In a shopping arcade, the viewer often passes a few meters from the screen. In that case, high image detail, smooth animations, and the ability to present small offer elements, prices, or QR codes matter. An outdoor screen next to a busy road works differently. The viewer sees it from a dozen or several dozen meters away, so brightness, contrast, and a clear, simplified creative matter more.

An advertising billboard can serve a strictly sales-related, informational, or image-building function. In a shop, it draws attention to promotions and new arrivals. In a shopping mall, it can direct customer flow or present tenant content. In a club, hotel, or showroom, it builds a dynamic visual backdrop. Pixel pitch determines image legibility

Pixel pitch, the distance between the centers of adjacent LED pixels, is one of the most important parameters. It's given in millimeters. The smaller the value, the higher the pixel density and the better the close-up image quality. However, this doesn't mean you should always choose the finest grid. A smaller pixel pitch raises the screen's cost, and at a great viewer distance, its advantage can be practically invisible.

For indoor applications, such as storefronts, malls, receptions, points of sale, or conference rooms, screens with a fine grid are often chosen. They let you display text, product graphics, and video material from a short distance. For outdoor screens and large-format structures mounted high up, a wider grid is usually appropriate. The image stays legible, and the investment is better matched to the actual viewing distance.

When designing, it's not worth relying solely on the minimum technical distance. You need to account for the customer's actual position, walkway width, mounting height, and direction of movement. A screen placed behind a storefront window is viewed at a different angle than a medium above a venue's entrance. For text content, you also need to leave an appropriate margin and use large, legible fonts. Even a high-resolution screen won't fix a design that contains too much information.

Brightness and ambient conditions

LED screen brightness is chosen to match the ambient light. Indoors, an overly bright screen can strain the eyes and cause glare on shiny surfaces. Outdoors, the situation is reversed - the screen has to remain legible in full sun. The brightness values declared by the manufacturer should be analyzed together with the location: south-facing exposure, canopy coverage, storefront depth, and the type of glass.

In an outdoor installation, housing resistance to dust and water, heat dissipation, and operation under variable temperatures also matter. The modules, power supplies, and cables have to form a system designed for the specific environment. The housing's protection rating shouldn't be treated as the only criterion. Connection quality, service access, and how the support structure is secured matter just as much.

If the screen operates in the evening or at night, brightness adjustment is needed. This helps reduce energy consumption, improve viewing comfort, and adapt the broadcast to the surroundings. In elaborate installations, a schedule can automatically change brightness and turn the screen on and off at set hours.

Fixed structure, modular screen, or rental

The installation format should follow from the usage period and mounting method. A fixed advertising billboard mounted on a facade, a pole, or inside a venue requires preparing the structure, power supply, data transmission, and a servicing plan. This solution suits places where the screen is meant to run year-round and regularly present campaigns, offers, or operational information.

Modular screens let you build custom dimensions and proportions. They work well as media walls, stage backdrops, club screens, and displays fitted to a specific architectural niche. Before ordering, you need to determine not just the width and height, but also the total resolution in pixels. This is what determines the best format for preparing video materials.

For short-term events, a rental screen or renting a ready-made set can be more advantageous. Rental housings are designed for frequent assembly, transport, and fast mounting. They have different priorities than a fixed structure: low weight, quick-connect systems, and ease of operation. It's worth remembering that an event screen also needs an operator or a person responsible for the signal source, video processor configuration, and content playback control.

Screen control is part of the investment

An LED display works correctly when its components are chosen as a system. Besides the modules themselves, you need power supplies, receiving cards, a controller or video processor, cabling, and a content source. For a simple advertising screen, a media player with schedule management may be enough. For an LED wall handling cameras, presentations, and stage signals, you'll need a scaling processor and an adequate number of video inputs.

The material update method is also key. For a single location, remote content delivery over a network is often practical. In venues with limited infrastructure, a local storage medium or a dedicated connection can be used. From the medium owner's point of view, it's important that daily operation doesn't require the installer's intervention. The system should allow quickly changing a promotion, broadcast time, or emergency message.
